Generalist Nursing Practice
Ferris State University requires each Bachelor of Science in Nursing Registered Nurse to meet the outcome of generalist nursing practice. This outcome states that every nurse will strive to, “organize the interdisciplinary health care needs of diverse populations across the lifespan toward achieving the goal of healthy individuals, families, groups and communities,” (Ferris State University, n.d.). As a nurse, our first and foremost goal is to provide the best quality of care to each individual, every time. We must strive to continually better our practices, ensuring our community receives the best care. I have met this outcome by promoting community based primary care in a rural health community by organizing a faux health and wellness clinic. Another way that I have met this outcome is by advocating for better dental care for Wisconsin children by composing a letter to the Governor of Wisconsin.
The faux health and wellness clinic project exhibits the importance of providing primary care to communities, especially rural communities, which often lack such an important aspect of care. The project used an interdisciplinary approach in which a primary doctor oversees operations of providing health screenings and immunizations to the underserved populations of Huron County, Michigan. The project also focused on providing follow-up care for all individuals that needed further assessments. This project supports FSU’s outcome of generalist nursing practice.
In order to meet the goal of health promotion, a nurse must advocate for his or her community. My advocacy letter encouraged Governor Scott Walker to provide increased dental care for Wisconsin children. Dental care is a very important aspect of health promotion; it helps prevent heart disease, nutritional deficits amongst other health woes. By composing a letter for improved dental care for the children of Wisconsin, I have further shown that I have met the outcome of generalist nursing practice.
