Theoretical Base for Practice
Using a theoretical approach in the patient care setting allows for logical processing of information using the nursing process. As a registered nurse, one must always evaluate his or her practice; by using a theoretical approach it allows for the nurse to be more objective with his or her evaluation. Alligood & Tomey, (2010) report, “Theory enables them to organize and understand what happens in practice, to analyze patient situations critically for clinical decision making; to plan care and propose appropriate nursing interventions; and to predict patient outcomes from the care and evaluate its effectiveness” (pg. 11). Ferris State University’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing program requires every BSN nurse to meet their outcome requirements for theoretical base for practice. This outcome requires every BSN to, “integrate theories and knowledge from the arts, humanities, sciences and nursing to develop a foundation for nursing practice,” (Ferris State University, n.d.). My analysis of Driving Miss Daisy produced by Zanuck & Zanuck and directed by Beresford showcases how I can relate a variety of theories into the act of nursing. My explanation of theory in correlation to health care workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens also depicts how I have met FSU’s requirement of integrating theory into my nursing practice.
My analysis of Driving Miss Daisy includes relating four different theories to the main character, each with a thorough analysis. This paper helped me become more aware of my practices related to the elderly and how I could better meet their needs related to how they are progressing with their aging process. With a thorough evaluation of my practice, I feel that I have not only met FSU’s outcome but it has also allowed me to improve my practice; in which I provide more age and patient centered care to each of my patients.
My work on my Capstone Nursing course project, Health Care Workers Exposed to Bloodborne Pathogens, required me to relate this topic to two theories, one nursing and one non-nursing. By correlating this topic to two theories I was able to integrate theory, nursing theory and science theory to current nursing practices. With this project, I helped not only myself but my fellow classmates examine their practice in relation to universal precautions. I believe, as a result, we all have made changes which have helped protect ourselves and our patients, thus meeting FSU’s outcome of theoretical base for practice.
