Professionalism
The nursing profession has made huge advancements in our practice, and we must always strive to continue such advances. As a nurse in order to continue the advancement of our profession, one must always attempt to better oneself. Ferris State University’s last outcome, professionalism, requires their BSN nurses to, “demonstrate a level of professionalism that is congruent with the inherent values, ethics and behaviors of the discipline of nursing,” (Ferris State University, n.d.). I feel like that this is not only a FSU requirement but also a personal goal in which I continually try to meet. The American Nurses Association (2010) also proclaims that every registered nurse, “engages in self-evaluation of practice on a regular basis, identifying areas of strength as well as areas in which professional growth would be beneficial,” (pg. 59). Throughout my BSN career at FSU, I have participated in self-assessment of my lifestyle as well as my nursing practice.
My Personal Health Assessment and Health Promotion Plan required an objective assessment of my lifestyle. I learned that I was not as healthy as I thought and that I needed to make improvements to better my self-esteem and health practices. Since this assessment I am losing weight, engage in physical activity five to six days a week as well as make a better attempt in eating healthier. This assessment not only improved my lifestyle but also my nursing practice, I feel that I can better meet the needs of my patients because I am a happier person, in turn improves my nursing care. This evaluation supports that I have met my professionalism outcome.
The Emergency Nurse Scope and Standards of Practice paper exhibits that the professionalism outcome has been met. This paper required a professional examination of my current practice. It also required me to identify areas in which needed strengthening. This allowed me to identify goals to promote professional development. In the plan I recognized that I needed to obtain my BSN, acquire my Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certificate, and prepare to become a Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN). I am in my final semester of my BSN, I became TNCC certified this past summer and plan on starting preparation for my CEN after completing my BSN degree. I feel that I am not only meeting my goals that I have prepared in my self- assessment of my lifestyle, as well as my nursing practice but it also showcases that I have met my professionalism outcome for FSU’s BSN program.
